Since ancient times, many people have climbed historic roads to reach the sacred place of “Koyasan”, which is 800 meters above sea level. The World Heritage site “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range” includes not only temples and shrines, but also ancient pilgrimage routes. The town at the foot of Koyasan “Koya-Sanroku” , which is the starting point of the pilgrimage route, has a rich history that has supported Koyasan and a traditional culture that has been nurtured over time, and is full of attractions for visitors. We are looking forward to welcoming you with a variety of activities that allow you to experience the history and tradition of the sacred “Koyasan” and “Koya-Sanroku”.

World Heritage “Choishi-michi” Trekking

Koyasan’s pilgrimage route “Choishi-michi” is registered as a World Heritage Site. Would you like to try trekking with a guide on the 19.5km-long Choishi-michi divided into 3 courses? It takes half a day to cover the entire trail, but it is a divided course so you can walk easily. Let’s walk to Koyasan while enjoying a variety of scenery, such as a path that weaves persimmon fields and a beautiful bamboo forest!

Crucian carp fishing with “Kishu Herazao” (traditional bamboo fishing rod)

“Kishu Herazao” has a tradition of over 100 years and is designated as a traditional craft of the country. “Kakuredani Pond” at the foot of Koyasan, which is known as the mecca of crucian carp fishing, you can try fishing under the guidance of a national traditional craftsman.

Koyasan Historical Tour

Koyasan, a sacred place where “Kukai” as known as “Kobo Daishi” opened 1200 years ago. One of Japan’s leading power spots where national treasures and important cultural properties are lined up, such as Danjo Garan, which is the core of this area, which is also registered as a World Heritage Site, Kongobu-ji Temple, the head temple, and Okuno-in, where Kukai is said to continue his eternal prayers. It is a safe private tour guided by a certified guide.

Koyasan night tour

A monk from Kongobu-ji temple will guide you through the Danjo Garan and Okuno-in in Koyasan. The Danjo Garan is sacred temple complex described as the center of Koyasan, which was opened by Kukai as a place for secret training in Shingon esoteric Buddhism. Okuno-in is the mausoleum of Kukai, surrounded by an immense graveyard. You can experience a bit of a test of courage in the fantastic atmosphere of the night.

Japanese tea ceremony and flower arrangement in “Kimono”

The oldest kimono store in Wakayama Prefecture offers an authentic kimono experience. At a townhouse that has been registered as a national tangible cultural property, you can experience wearing a kimono and experiencing traditional Japanese culture such as tea ceremony and flower arrangement. Upon request, we can also offer experiences using the Meiji-style ryokan “Katsuragi-kan” where pilgrims of Koyasan stayed.
